A blinding flash of light had the raptor pause in his hunting and he turned towards the thunderous roar. He blinked uncomprehending at the blood red sky and settled feathers the hot wind had ruffled before turning back to seeking the prey his mate needed.

The scent of fire on the wind had him hesitate for an instant, wavering between protecting his nest or fleeing the blaze.

Fire leapt and he turned and fled on swift feet, seeking to outrun the flames. The hot air seared his lungs and he fell, gasping for breath as blood bubbled from his mouth.
