James blinked as he stepped through the anomaly and sighed as his eyes became accustomed to the light. He raised an eyebrow at Abby who appeared stunned for a moment before she plastered a smile on her face.

“It might not be as bad as it looks.”

“Really?” James queried as he nodded at the half-ruined lighthouse that stood alone in the sand.

“It's shelter and we might find supplies.”

James shook his head at her false cheer but followed in her footsteps. At least he might find a proper bed, although from the look of it, he doubted it.

“Do you really think anything would have survive in this?”

Abby bit back a sigh at the despondence in James' voice. “Possibly. We won't know until we've looked, will we?”

James nodded half-heartedly as he forced a door open. “Kitchen should be through here. Why don't you check upstairs?”

Abby quirked an eyebrow at James' knowledge but decided to hold her curiosity, for now. A whine reminded her she was cradling the cub and she passed him to James. “Look after him.” She carefully climbed the stairs and glanced back at James, smiling as he held the cub protectively close.

****

Abby munched contentedly on her baked beans. “How did you know where the kitchen was?” Abby cursed herself when James' smile faded. “James?”

James sighed and ruffled the cub's fur. When he spoke his voice was slightly hollow. “We... Steff and I stayed in a lighthouse once. It had been converted into a holiday home. It had lovely views over the sea, we used to sit at the top and just hold each other.”

“That sounds lovely.”

James voice cracked. “I miss her.”

Abby pulled him into a hug, holding him tight as the cub twisted and licked his hand.

Love how you're going these in sets of 100 - it really allows us to keep the snippet feel but still have the plot move well.

Yay for Abby hugs and wolf cub licks. Poor James seems to be having it tough.

I'm sure the hugs and licks would help, but poor James is still grieving. Glad you liked it.

Awww, this is so bittersweet. They have food and shelter, but it also reminds them of home.
Beautiful use of the prompt.

Thanks. I'm afraid James went angsty on me. *nods* They do, but being that close to civilisation but not is probably worse for them. Glad you liked it.

*meeps* For some reason, it almost feels like they're more isolated now, a bit closer to civilisation, than they did before. Lovely!

*pets* I think they probably feel the same, surrounded by the ruined remians of civilisation. Thanks, glad you liked it even with the meep.

Um, no idea. Long enough for the sea to turn into a desert? I did considered daves but thought that might be a little too mean ;) Thanks for reading.

Yes, this defintely has a one step forward two steps back feel.

Poor James. But I'm glad they've brought the cub with them.

Sorry but at least they didn't meet any daves

Abby looks shocked at the suggestion they'd have left the cub behind and James has become attached to him too, but shh

Thanks for reading and for the beta.
