Abby stumbled over tangled roots and ended up face down in the damp dirt, coughing as she almost swallowed some.

“Are you OK?”

“Fine.” Abby wondered about snapping at him, but he was at least talking to her again. A soft whimper had her pause as she was about to rise. Peering into the tangle she spotted the squirming body and pulled it free, holding it against her breast as she stood up.

James sighed as he saw it. “No. You are not keeping it.”

“While, I'm not leaving it here to die.”

“Creatures die all the time. It's called nature.”

Abby scowled at James' back as he strolled off towards their camp until the wolf cub's soft mewling distracted her. “Don't worry, big bad Uncle James won't hurt you.”

She walked back to the camp and settled herself and her new charge on the opposite side to James. They didn't speak as they ate dinner and curled into their bedding for the night.

Abby woke several hours later to find her charge gone. Frantic for an instant before she heard James' voice. Looking over at him, she couldn't hide her grin as she saw him cradling it in his arms.
