Nick trailed his fingers through the fur on James' nape as they entered the park. He grinned as he watched his lover. James' tail was wagging furiously and he seemed to be bouncing on his paws. Nick made a mental note to check his desk calendar to confirm his suspicions. He had started to mark the days when James was extra-frisky and he wouldn't be surprised if tonight was a full moon. Nick grinned at the thought of the fun they'd have later, but first... “You're too frisky for just a walk, aren't you?”
He yelped when James' tail thwacked him hard on the leg. “Hey, that hurt.” Nick glanced around to make sure they were alone. He really didn't want anyone to overhear him as he crouched and whispered in James' ear, “Just remember it's my turn on top and I still have toys to play with.”
Nick grinned when James' reaction was to give a single bark and wag his tail so hard it looked as if it would fly off at any moment. “I take it that means 'fuck yes?” It didn't surprise Nick when James still managed to quirk his trademark eyebrow even in his wolf-form before he gave another single bark. Nick chuckled when James nudged him. “Keen, aren't you? Come on, let's burn off a little of your excess energy or you'll wear me out.”
Nick was enjoying the unusually warm spring evening as he slowly strolled down the path leading to the designated area where dogs could be off their leads. James might have the urge to run in this weather but Nick was hoping for an empty bench in the shade to sit on so he could relax and watch James have fun. He smiled as he felt James press against his leg as he paced beside him. Close enough that any passer-bys would assume James was on a lead. Not that it would fool anyone who approached too closely, but Nick knew few people would willingly get that close to his huge companion.
Nick smiled as he saw a couple of dogs playing together as their owners watched them. He glanced down as James nudged against his leg again and chuckled at the low whine James emitted. Nick crouched beside James and hugged him as he pretended to remove the non-existent lead. He smiled when James leaned against him and Nick took the opportunity to run his fingers through fur so much softer than it looked. Nick rubbed behind one of James' silky ears and smiled as his lover's back leg gave a few aborted twitches. His smile turned into a smirk as Nick wondered if James still had that magic spot when he was in his human-form. He'd have to investigate that... maybe tonight. A low growl broke Nick's musings and he looked into the unamused eyes of his lover. Nick grinned and stroked James' ear as he told him, “Be good.”
Nick shook his head in amusement when James' attention suddenly became fixed on a patch of undergrowth. James' nose and ears twitched and he let out a whine before he darted into the vegetation to locate whatever had attracted his attention. The angry chittering of a squirrel coming from the undergrowth had Nick smiling, his lover had a strange attraction to squirrels and chasing them.
A flash of grey fur bounded across the grass as the squirrel broke cover. A dark blur followed close behind it as James charged after it. Nick smiled as he watched them race across the ground, twisting and turning as the squirrel tried to lose James and James attempted to stay on its tail, his tongue lolling and, Nick knew, having a great time.
Nick swore as he realised the squirrel, and hence James, was heading straight towards the playing dogs. Bloody hell, he didn't need James bursting in on those dogs, it would be a disaster for all concerned. He let out the piercing whistle he had been practising and sighed in relief as James slowed down and trotted back to him. So much for sitting on a bench. “Let's find somewhere for you to play without scaring anyone, OK, love?”
When James let out another single bark, Nick let his fingers trail through the fur on James' nape. He looked around before he smiled and chose their favourite path. Nick soon found himself alone as he followed the packed dirt trail as it wound between the trees. A variety of flowers bloomed on the sides of the path and he could hear the calls of several birds in the trees. It really was a beautiful place for a walk. He glanced around for James but couldn't spot him, not that Nick was worried about him, he knew James wouldn't go far in his exploration. Nick grinned, not unless he found another squirrel to annoy as he loped behind it. However, Nick knew James would be back and not just for him. If they took one of the rougher side-trails they would soon find the small lake and James could enjoy a swim after his day at the ARC. Ah, yes. This time Nick would make sure he stood well back when James launched himself into the water. He really didn't want to get another soaking... although, Nick couldn't help his smile as he remembered how attentive James had been when he'd apologised.
Nick almost jumped as his musings were broken into by the sound of his name being called out. He spun around and smiled at the young woman who waved at him. He waved back as she approached. “Jo. Keeping well, I hope.”
“Can't complain.” Jo walked up to Nick, hugging him as she kissed his cheek. “Isn't it such a lovely evening for a walk?” She looked around and frowned slightly, “Is James here too?”
“Unfortunately not, he's still busy at work.”
Jo's frown increased. “You're walking by yourself? That's not like you, it something wrong? You and James haven't had a row, have you? Oh, please tell me you haven't. You always look so happy together.”
Nick raised a hand. “No row, Jo, honest.”
Jo didn't look convinced. “Care for some company?”
“I'd be delighted.” Nick held out his arm for her. He knew she would try to discover the truth about why he was walking alone in the park. He didn't think James would give her much time to pry before he made his presence known, and when Nick heard snuffling in the nearby bushes he knew he had been correct.
Jo gasped when she spied the huge dog seemingly emerge out of the shadows and just appear beside them. He sat down with his tail wagging as Nick scratched him behind the ear. His back leg twitching again and his head tilting as Nick found that spot again.
“Bloody hell, he gave me such a start. Does he belong to you and James?” When Nick nodded, she continued, “He's lovely.” Jo laughed when James lifted a paw for her to shake. “Absolutely lovely.” She shook the paw. “You're a good boy, aren't you?”
Nick grinned at his lover's behaviour. For someone who professed to hate playing the dog, James was proving to excel in the role.
“What's you name, boy?” Jo leaned down as she reached around James' neck and frowned at Nick. “Hmm, no collar. Really, Nick.”
Nick shrugged, “He hates them, we put one on him and he just scratched his neck raw trying to get it off.” He suppressed a winch when James' tail thwacked him hard on the leg. “We even tried a loose chain one but he caught a claw on it. After that the vet recommend just micro-chipping him.”
“Ah, you poor thing.” Jo dropped down to her knees as her hands ran through the fur of James' neck. “Well, it's grown back nicely, Nick. You and James obviously take good care of him.”
“We do our best.” Nick grinned as he helped Jo up. “It's why I'm here. I thought it would be better to walk him now rather than wait for James to come home.” He sighed melodramatically. “You know James, he works all hours leaving us home by ourselves, doesn't he, boy?” He offered Jo his arm again and suppressed another wince as James' tail thwacked his leg once more.
“You poor things.” Jo added, laughing as she took his arm, “Are you sure James won't get jealous?” She looked worriedly at James when he coughed. “He's not got kennel cough, has he? You poor thing.” Nick smothered a grin when Jo ran her fingers through James' fur and lifted his chin to look at him. “Are you sure he's OK?”
“He's fine, Jo.” Nick stroked James' ear, “Aren't you, boy.”
“And James?”
“Knows which way I swing, Jo, as do you.”
“True,” Jo sighed as melodramatically as Nick had previously. “All the best catches are gay.”
“You'll get no argument from me.” Nick grinned when James gave a single bark.
Jo smiled. “Impatient for your walk... Nick, you never did tell me his name?”
“Oh... it's Shadow.”
“I can see why, I didn't see him under the trees.”
Nick nodded, “That's why we named him that. Now,” He offered his arm to Jo once more as James paced restlessly, “Shall we continue before Shadow runs off by himself.”
“Yes, of course.” Jo took Nick's arm and they followed James as he trotted down the path. James paused now and again as he sniffed the ground or wandered off into the bushes before racing after Nick and Jo. James dashed ahead as they approached the turn-off and paused to paw at the ground and whine. He took a step onto the trail, wagging his tail and with his ears pricked in an endearing way as he looked between his companions and the trail.
Nick smiled at James, his lover was doing his best begging look as he pawed the trail and whimpered. “This is where we turn off, Jo. Shadow loves to swim in the lake.”
Jo smiled at James, “So I can see. Well, it's still early and it sounds like a lovely way for Shadow to finish his walk.” She caressed James' silky ear and smiled as he tilted his head to give her better access. “You're a very good boy, Shadow.”
It didn't take long to reach the lake, even with James darting off to investigating his surroundings. James paused before glancing over his shoulder at Nick, one paw raised as he whined. Nick smiled and nodded, “We better stay here, Jo. He makes a bloody big splash.”
James snorted and gave another single bark before he took off at full speed towards the lake. As he grew close, he gathered himself and flung himself into the lake, landing with a huge splash several feet from the shore. Curtains of water flew upwards, hiding James from sight as the water rained back down.
“I see what you mean,” Jo remarked as she watched James' dark head as he swam strongly in the water, before emerging further along the shore.
James' tongue lolled out of his mouth and he gave himself a shake, flicking water for several feet. He was still dripping when he trotted back towards Nick and Jo, clearly grinning and with his tail wagging hard.
Nick looked at James and smiled. “I'd better get him home and dried off.”
Jo nodded, “Before James complains about the puddles?”
“Something like that.” Nick felt James' tail thwack him again, the water from his tail slowly penetrating his jeans. “Do you want to walk back with us?”
“Thanks, Nick, but I'm going to meet my mum at the station and go out for a meal.” She walked as far as the main track before she kissed Nick on the cheek and then shook James' paw. “Oh, that reminds me. You and James must come around to dinner soon.”
“I'll ask James when he gets in.” Nick watched Jo walk off in the opposite direction to them, before he raised an eyebrow at James. “You do realise you're going to pay for making me wet.”
James gave another single bark before starting to trot home. Once he was several feet away from Nick, he paused and looked back over his shoulders, pawing the ground before walking back to Nick to herd him out of the park.
Nick laughed as James head-butted him. “I'm going, I'm going.” As he strolled back to the exit with James pacing close to his side, Nick muttered, “You really are bloody incorrigible.” He grinned at the single bark he received in response.
