“Daddy?”
James moaned softly.
“Wake up, Daddy.”
James mumbled unintelligible and opened one bleary eye. “William?” The wobble of his son's lip had James awake in a heartbeat. “What's wrong?”
William raised his little hand, his favourite toy dangling broken in his grasp. “It broke.” His lip wobbled even more. “I'm sorry.”
James smiled in relief. “Nothing that can't be fixed, William.” He climbed out of bed and scooped his son up. “Now, back to bed. I'll read you a story and fix your toy in the morning.”
“Love you, daddy.”
