James rubbed his tired eyes before he returned to reading the screen. He turned at the sound of footsteps and was out of his chair in a heartbeat to help Stephanie onto the settee, tucking the blanket around her and pressing a gentle kiss to her hair.

“James?” Stephanie motioned to the computer. “You promised me. The boys will need you to be strong for them.”

“I'm sorry.” James ducked his head before continuing, his voice pleading, “Please, Steff. This one looks promising.”

Stephanie sighed and tugged him into a hug. “One last try, love.”
