Sir James Lester scowled at Cutter as the man slogged through the mud and deposited a wet and amazingly muddy creature in his arms. He sighed deeply as he felt the mud ooze into the expensive fabric of his suit.
A cold, wet nose pressed against his neck had Lester glaring at the creature in his arms, although his expression changed slightly when the dog used her warm tongue to lick a stripe across his face.
Cutter chuckled softly. “I see she likes you, Lester.”
Lester pulled his attention from the dog to glare at Cutter. “Any particular reason you decided to ruin my suit, Cutter?”
Cutter smiled as the dog pushed against him in response to him scratching her behind her ear. “You did say your kids wanted a pet...” He fell silent as the body bag was carried past them. Cutter's voice was soft as he added, “She is homeless now.”
With a heavy sigh, Lester looked the dog in the eyes and earned himself another swipe with her tongue. “I suppose you'll clean up OK.” He turned and walked towards one of the cars as the little dog wagged her tail and resumed trying to wash his face before she snuggled against him.
