My composure was hanging by a thread and, for once, I didn’t give a fuck. Captain Ryan was… No, I refused to accept my lover might be dying. I knew soldiering was risky, but I just couldn’t imagine a world without him by my side.

I swallowed, my throat thick as unbidden tears clouded my vision. No, I wouldn’t, I couldn’t break, not when Ryan needed me.

I rose with that thought, feeling a hand tug me back into my seat, squeezing my arm and I felt that thread unravel.

I would not break.

I couldn’t.

Not now.

Not yet.
