Lester was gasping for breath as he followed hard on Lieutenant Lyle's heels. The man was weaving through the trees and was slowly pulling away from Lester, who had staggered and slowed to a pained jog and then a stumbling walk.
His hands on his knees as he panted, Lester almost yelped when his shoulder was grasped. His head jerked up, eyes wide with fear, before he cursed, “Fuck, Lyle. Don't do that.”
“Sorry, sir.” Lyle didn't sound sorry as his eyes scanned the path behind them. “We need to keep moving.”
Lester shook his head. “Can't.”
“Unless you want to be eaten, you can. Now, move it.” Lyle grabbed Lester's arm and pushed him forward.
Every time Lester slowed, Lyle was there to push him on. Every time he stumbled, Lyle was there to catch him.
Finally, they burst out of the trees into a clearing and the best sight either of them had seen – the other members of the team and the open anomaly.
Lester staggered and would have fallen, saved only by Lyle's arms as the man called out, “Incoming. Scaly bastards.”
The sound of automatic gunfire was the sweetest sound Lester had ever heard as Lyle helped him through the anomaly and back home.
