A/N: Not idea when I wrote this… angst?
Abby knew she'd had a happy family once, full of laughter and joy. She could remember happier times with her father, mother and even Jack, of days spent out together. She couldn't have just imagined it all, could she?
What she did remember was the day she'd come home from school to find her father gone, all his belongings with him. She couldn't remember if he'd left or if her mother had made him go; all Abby could recall was that she'd missed him but he never seemed to miss her.
Even clearer in her memory was the long series of sleazy boyfriends her mum had moved into their house. Half of them called themselves her step-dad, most of them were useless, some of them were even worse. There was a reason she'd learned self-defence and a well placed knee worked wonders; even if her mum had yelled at her afterwards when another deadbeat left. It had set the pattern of her life, a series of failed relationships with her expecting her then boyfriend to betray her somehow, as so many men had in the past.
Abby knew it was why she blew hot and cold with Connor. No matter how much she trusted him, the memories of betrayal and pain returned and she pushed him away. A year lost in the past showed her she could rely on him. That he would be there for her, even in her darkest moments, and she had promised herself that she'd try harder to let him in.
Finally making it back to the ARC had been a relief and finding out that they – she – hadn't been forgotten had her smiling. Knowing that Lester hadn't given up on them – her – that he'd kept their lockers and belongings when he could have just thrown it away, made her realise she had a place within the team... no, within the family they had become.
She smiled at Connor, maybe it was time to gather her courage and ask him out on a date.
