I realised I had never understood what people had meant by love hurts until the precise moment when Nick returned from the Permian and had looked at but not seen me. Oh, I had always known the anomalies might take my lover from me but this… this was far worse.

Every time I saw Nick – I suppose I should think of him as Cutter now he was no longer my Nick – my heart broke a little more. It hurt so bloody much to be dismissed as nothing more than his obviously irritating and unwanted boss when I still loved him.
