My thoughts turned to my mother’s favourite hymn, one her grandfather had often sung to her as a child. I recalled her saying it had given him comfort in the trenches, that hope remained even in the darkest of times.

Hope seemed so far away when I was face-to-face with the Future Predators. All I could see was my own death and…

I started at a noise beside me, my heart thudding in my chest and my breathing harsh gasps. I felt arms wrap around me as I was held against a firm chest.
