Jenny jumped at a ‘chak-chak-chak-chak’, gasping as she spotted the lone magpie on the sill. Her mind flashed to the rhyme she’d learned as a child and she managed, “Hello, Mr Magpie. How’s your wife and family.

Her phone startled her before she shook her head. It was just a silly superstition, but she couldn’t shake the fear that something had gone wrong on the mission.

A second ‘chak-chak-chak-chak’ had her glancing back at the window and smiling as a second magpie joined the first.

She answered the phone, joy filling her heart at Ryan’s voice. He was coming home.
