The photograph fluttered down onto the work Stephen was marking. He felt his world crumble once more. “I’m sorry.”

“For what, Stephen?”

Stephen flinched at Cutter’s tone, curling away from Cutter’s hand.

“I see.” Cutter sighed heavily. “You’re a fool, Stephen, a bloody fool, but the responsibility was always Helen’s.”

“I.. what?”

“Ah, she told you I had a temper, that ‘you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry’ didn’t she?” At Stephen’s shaky nod, Cutter added, “You’re the student, Helen was in a position of in loco parentis.”

“You’ll forgive me?”

“It won’t be easy, sometimes, but I already have.”
