Stephen woke with a gasp, his breath rapid as he desperately drew oxygen into what felt like starved lungs. He glanced around, eyes darting back and forth as he sought threats. His eyes widened before he collapsed back, his head hitting a pillow. “I’m dead then.”
“Dead? No, you idiot, but it was fucking close.”
“You’re alive?” Stephen managed. “Lester’s a bastard.”
“It was touch and go, then rehab and…”
“I would have visited.”
“I know. I gave Lester an earful when I heard you’d been hurt. He was gracious enough to give me a lift.”
“Love you too, Tom.”
