I woke, gasping, heart thudding as fingers found long-healed wounds. My gaze darted until I remembered I was safe. Knowing sleep would prove elusive, I got up.

“Nightmare?” Connor asked, listening intently to the crackling radio.

“Is that Becker?”

“No,” Connor replied. “Sorry, I think its the dawn chorus.”

“Birds?”

“No, its an electromagnetic phenomenon when…”

“Connor!”

“Sorry.” Connor nudged me. “I’m sure Becker’s OK. Danny’s with him.”

My retort remained unspoken, knowing Connor worried about his own lover. “Why the dawn chorus?”

“It can be converted to sound like birds.” Connor paused, “They’ll be OK, won’t they?”

“Yes, Connor.”
