A/N: For P100 prompt 703: Castle. A bit of a side-swipe at the prompt – Castling is a move in chess to protect the king.


Lester hung up, composed himself and waited for the fireworks. He didn’t have to wait long before his office door was opened so forceable that it bounced back as Jenny stormed in. “You bastard!”

“Good morning to you to, Ms Lewis.”

“Good morning, James,” Jenny managed, every syllable ground out before adding, “Why didn’t you tell me Nick was still alive?”

“You know Helen would have tried again if she realised he was still alive. No one’s safer than a dead man.” He paused before adding, “Your grief had to be real to convince her.”

“You really are a bastard.”
