James Lester put on his best fake smile and expertly circulated the room making small talk, before he accepted a glass of overpriced plonk from a woman whose fake smile wasn’t as well practised. He listened to Burton’s spiel before raising his glass to the toast, “To new friends.”

The minister might have given him any choice except to accept the new management structure, not if he wanted to be part of this new “improved” ARC. Which Lester did; he needed to be at the ARC, and not only to be there if, no, when his people finally returned home.
