Lester smiled as he watched from the sidelines. He couldn’t quite decide who was enjoying themselves the most, the excited children stuck in hospital over the festive period or Matt, as he handed out the presents. Both had missed out on far too many Christmases.
He felt a hand slip into his and glanced down at the young pyjama-clad boy looking up at him in wonder. “Mister, is he Santa Claus?”
“No,” Lester murmured, before crouching down beside the disappointed boy. “But I’ll tell you a secret.” He smiled at the boy’s eager expression. “He is one of Santa’s helpers.”
That evening, Matt sipped the whisky James handed to him and smiled at his lover. “Thank you for arranging everything, James. It was perfect.”
James waved a dismissive hand. “It was nothing, my dear boy.”
Matt nodded, he knew James detested those who bragged about their charitable deeds, declaring they were obviously out to feed their own egos. He smiled as an idea occurred to him, one he knew would be preferred to any amount of praise. He leaned in, his words caressing his lover's ear. “Well, James, we’ve been so nice today, how do you feel about being naughty?”
