I had always been too curious for my parents and elders, and I believe I drove them to distraction with my constant questions. They’d certainly been happy when a passing monk had asked to take me on as a novice.

I had feared what would happen to me, monks were renowned harsh taskmasters. I soon learned I had nothing to fear. The truth of the World Before was even more beautiful and more terrifying than I had ever imagined.

I wholeheartedly dedicated myself to the monks’ – to our cause: to rebuild civilization after the Great Disaster which had destroyed it.

It's sad that nobody managed to stop the Great Disaster, but this novice and the monks show there is always hope. Lovely!

True, but the monks are doing they best to make a new world for the survives.
