I was enjoying my lover’s enthusiastic responses to my attentive ministrations when I almost kissed the scar, still red and livid against his pale skin. I couldn’t continue, not when I knew how close I’d come to losing him.

I felt his lips against mine, his tongue demanding entrance. I finally pulled free, breathless, and felt his hand caress the back of my neck. I could feel his words against my ear as he held me close, promising he’d always be there.

After today, I knew he wasn’t safe, but I clung to that promise as I clung to him.
