The words, “James Peregrine Lester”, spoken in that tone had James suppress a wince as he turned, “Jenny...” He frowned at her dishevelled appearance. “What happened!”

“What happened?” Jenny advanced a step, making James draw back, having no wish to get whatever she was covered in on his suit. “I’ll tell you what happened. Bloody Cutter and his high-handedness.”

“He did that?” James gestured at her clothes.

“Yes! No.” Jenny paused as if to gather her thoughts. “His idea caused the worms to explode. I want hazard pay, James.”

“Jen.”

“And a new wardrobe or you’re sleeping on the settee.”
