The Time Tribe had a well-developed procedure they followed at every gateway; too many had been lost before they had.

When a gateway was found, they waited to see if anything dangerous emerged before a scout entered, searching for supplies or any hidden dangers. The Tribe only past through a gateway if it was safe and had something useful.

But with Charlotte ill, Emily and Ethan ignored those normal checks once they'd decided this world appeared to be the right time period. They had to take the risk, they didn't have a choice if they were going to save Charlotte.
