It was strange to think that whatever he'd had with Christine might be over. He'd never been quite sure where he'd stood with her, their one-upmanship almost a game but with a deadly serious edge.

Whenever he'd gained a position, Christine had done her best to undermine him and attempt to show she could do the job better. Not that he could plead innocence, he knew he'd taken every opportunity to beat Christine at her own game.

He'd expected their competition to last until they were old and grey, not to end at the claws of a bloody future predator.
