Ryan kept half-an-eye on the fire he'd lit as he poured a healthy measure of Scotch into the coffee he'd just brewed. He smiled in satisfaction when the fire caught and started to send warmth through the cold lounge, knowing James would be a bit chilly after having to venture back into the cold to retrieve his briefcase from his Mercedes.

He smiled as he recalled exactly why James had forgotten his briefcase in the first place. Ryan's mind was full of those pleasurable memories as he poked the fire. At least, it was until he glanced at the clock and the time registered. James shouldn't have taken this long and Ryan hurried towards the front door, as thoughts of the anomalies and of Helen bloody Cutter came to mind.

When the front door slammed open, Ryan's hand flew to his thigh and the pistol he wasn't carrying. He swore when the wind whipped the snow into the hall and then again when his caught sight of his lover, almost staggering in with his arms wrapped around himself.

“James!” Ryan cried, before the shivers which racked his lover's form spurred him into action. He swiftly covered the distance between them, shutting and locking the door before steering James into the lounge. He tried to tug James' jacket from his shoulders, swearing when his lover didn't cooperate, instead clutching the cold and damp material closer to himself. “Come on, James. Let me get this off you and get you warmed up.” Ryan briefly considered a shower rather than just the fire, but dismissed it as he knew the bathroom would be bloody cold with them gone all day.

“I'm fine,” James muttered.

Ryan snorted, the chattering of teeth belied James' statement. Fearing that James wasn't thinking straight, he chose to take a more physical approach to things, after all, he had manhandled James before when he had been ill. He swore softly when James danced out of his reach before frowning when he heard a noise. “Did your jacket just squeak?”

“Um.”

Ryan smiled at James' flustered expression before the man blushed slightly and extracted two rather bedraggled creatures from his jacket. Two pairs of green eyes stared up almost pleadingly at Ryan before one let out a faint yet demanding meow.

“James?”

“I was getting my briefcase...” James trailed off and glanced towards the door before adding, “Fuck! It's still in the car.”

Ryan grabbed him before he'd taken a step. “I'll get it later.” He was about to ask where James had found the kittens, especially on a night like tonight, but the words died unspoken as James' shivers decreased. He knew he had to get James – and the kittens – warm before they risked hypothermia and that was the only important thing right now. “Now let's get you, all of you, warmed up.”

James looked rebellious for a second before the kittens let out a pitiful sound as they huddled against his chest. “Fine.”

“Now, give me them and strip.”

“This is not the time and place, Ryan,” James remarked.

“Especially in front of innocent eyes?” Ryan asked as he took possession of the kittens, earning a meow of displeasure as they were removed from James' warmth. “Strip, James, or I will do it for you.”

James refused to meet Ryan's eyes as he removed his sodden clothing. “I couldn't leave them out there.”

Ryan smiled as he cuddled the kittens, and to think Cutter thought James was a heartless bastard. “I know, James. Now, sit in front of the fire with them and I'll get you a blanket.”

“And a hot water bottle.”

James' voice had Ryan stop dead, an incredulous look on his face. “What?”

“For the kittens. They're freezing.”

Ryan nodded, he should have thought of that himself and that reminded him of how to warm James up. He checked the temperature of the coffee he'd made before handing both mugs to his lover. “Drink them, they'll warm you up.”

James took a sip, a satisfied sigh on his lips. “Hurry up with the blanket.” He quickly added, “For them,” when Ryan took a worried step towards him.

Ryan smiled as he stepped back into the lounge, two blankets over his arm and the hot water bottle in his hand. James was half-asleep in front of the fire, the two kittens curled up on his chest. He must have made a noise as James' eyes opened and he looked, for a moment, as if he'd been caught doing something he shouldn't.

“Think about taking a photograph and you'll be on the settee.”

“Can I have the kittens with me?” Ryan asked, earning himself a half-hearted glare from James and a complaining meow when James shifted position.

Ryan quickly placed one of the blankets on the floor, folded so the fluffy hot water bottle was beneath a fold, and retrieved the kittens from James.

“Ryan?” James reached out for the blanket as the kittens snuggled into the warmth.

“It's fine. I checked it to make sure it wasn't too hot,” Ryan said before adding, “I've also phoned Abby and asked her advice.”

“You've what?”

“Don't worry, your reputation is safe,” Ryan assured his lover. “She said not to feed them until they're warm and that she'll drop some formula around in the morning.”

James shook his head. “Sorry, I... that was a sensible thing to do. I...”

“Knew you'd agree,” Ryan murmured as he shook out the second blanket. “Now, sit up so I can wrap you up warm too.” He smiled as he draped the blanket around James' shoulders before tugging his lover closer until he could wrap his arms around him. He rested his chin on James' shoulder, smiling as he realised his lover was now warm, and asked the question he'd been curious about ever since he'd seen the kittens. “Where'd you find them?”

“I found a box dumped next to our gate and went to put it in the bin.” James reached out to stroke a finger down one of the kitten's backs, smiling as it began to purr. “It was only when I picked it up that I felt them move and heard them cry out. Someone had just left them out in the cold to die!” He shook his head, his voice soft as he tickled the kittens. “How could anyone dump them, especially on a night like tonight?”

Ryan nuzzled at James' neck, knowing he was the only one who saw the real James. He reached out to stroke the kittens as well. “I don't know but some people are just shitgibbons.”

“Shitgibbons? Is that one of Stringer's?” James queried as he snuggled back against Ryan's chest.

Ryan nodded before realising James wouldn't be able to see him. “Yes. He was bawling out one of Becker's useless fuckwits.”

“Some people are definitely shitgibbons.”

“So,” Ryan asked as he licked a strip down James' neck. “Can we keep them?”

“So much for innocent eyes,” James replied, although he turned his head for a kiss.

“James?” Ryan pressed, his hand drifting south.

“Ryan!” James grabbed Ryan's wrist. “Not in front of the kittens.”

“Spoilsport,” Ryan muttered.

“You can corrupt them later.”

Ryan smiled. “So, we'll be keeping Smudge and Smirk?”

“Yes, you can ask Abby tomorrow what we need for them,” James said, before raising an eyebrow at his lover. “Those are the names you want to call them?”

“Yep,” Ryan said. “What do you want to call them? Bach and Wagner?”

“They would be more suitable...” James met his gaze before sighing. “Even if I call them that, you'll be calling them Smudge and Smirk, won't you?”

“Definitely.”

“Fine,” James peered at the kittens. “Which one is Smudge?”

“The one with the black mark on his nose.”

James shot Ryan an annoyed look. “Less of the sarcasm, Ryan.” He glanced at the second black-and-white kitten. “Why Smirk?”

“Because that expression on his face is exactly like yours, he know what he wants and he knows how to get it.”

“Mmm,” James mumbled in apparent agreement. “And do you know what I want right now.”

“I thought we were going to corrupt them later?”

“No time like the present,” James replied as he grabbed Ryan and kissed him hard. “Find a box for them and then...”

“Then?”

“Bed.” James smirked at his lover. “But you better bring them up too, I don't want them causing trouble down here by themselves.”

“So, we're going to have sex in front of them?” Ryan looked at the kittens before turning back to James.

James snorted. “Fine. Find a box they can't get out of and place it so they can't see us.” He raised an eyebrow before adding, “Will that satisfy your need for privacy?”

“Definitely.” Ryan slipped James some tongue when he kissed him. “Now, get upstairs with them and I'll bring the box up.”

“Impatient.” James squawked when Ryan smacked his boxer-clad arse. He shot Ryan a glare before cuddling the kittens closer. “Keep that up and I'll be sharing the bed with them, not you.”

“Fine, I'll behave.”

“That'll be a first.” James started to climb the stairs, wiggling his hips as he added, “Don't keep me waiting...”

“Fuck!” Ryan said before dashing to find a suitable box. Kittens or no kittens watching them, he was going to make sure James gave him what he was offering.

Aw, poor kittens. :( Shitgibbons is right!

I adore the names. Smudge and Smirk fits perfectly.

Well done, both James and Ryan. Both have their heads on straight.

AW, that's gorgeous, thank you!

I foresee a lot of comments along the lines of 'not in front of the kittens' from now on. And yes, some people are definitely shitgibbons.
