Lester knew he was breaking policy, but he had to see Ryan with his own eyes. The doctor had refused him access to the recovery room until Ms Brown had intervened. He really ought to see about getting her a rise.

The sight of Ryan lying pale and still, bloodied and torn was almost too much for Lester's vaunted control. He could feel his knees start to buckle and it was only Ms Brown's grip on his arm which kept him from an ignoble display of humanity.

But, for once, Lester didn't care, not now he knew Ryan would recover.
