Ryan pushed himself harder than his rehab team advised, but he would get fit, even if the army was lost to him. He paused, treading water when he realised he was being watched, before making for the steps and the man waiting for him.

“You're looking well, Captain.”

Ryan shook his head as he peered up at his former boss. “I'm not coming back.”

“I'm not allowed to visit to see how you are?”

Ryan hauled himself out of the water, his limp apparent as he hobbled towards the changing room. “You never do anything without an ulterior motive, sir.”

Seeing Lester reminded Ryan he thought they might have had something, once...but two weeks had past without sight of him and Ryan knew Lester wouldn't be interested in him, not now.

“You did say I'd be in trunks if this was a social call, Captain.” When Ryan just stared at him, Lester nodded. “I'll not impose my presence on you, Captain.”

“Wait!”

“Captain?”

“Ryan and it's not unwelcome, sir.”

Lester smiled. “I'm told I'm good at massage...”

Ryan raised an eyebrow. “Are you here to offer me a position or to proposition me, sir?”

“James and can't I do both?”
