The crack of hand impacting cheek echoed around the room. “How could you?” Jenny hissed.

“It was safer if you believed Cutter was dead.”

Jenny took a furious step forward, her hands twitching as she bit off each word. “You hardly protected him by letting Helen know where he was.”

Lester shrugged. “We had to stop Helen.”

“You risked Nick's life to do it.” Jenny gave him a scornful look. “You really are a heartless bastard.”

“I prefer pragmatic,” Lester replied. “It all worked to plan, Jenny.” He smiled wryly after she stormed out, knowing it was for the best.
