Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4

The forest was silent except for the hoot of an owl as it perched on a branch, its large, orange eyes peering into the night for prey. It ruffled its feathers and hooted again when it spotted a flicker of movement in the distance, taking flight towards it before veering off as the flicker flared into a glowing ball of light. Only a moth, attracted by the light, was left to witness the anomaly shimmering before a shape ran through it and dropped into a crouch, half-hidden in the undergrowth.

***

Danny peered into the darkness, searching for anything else moving in the woods. Sensing nothing close by, he straightened and turned towards the anomaly, growing impatient when its surface remained undisturbed. “Come on, come on.” The men with him should have been right behind him, where the hell where they? He took a step towards it when the anomaly flickered once more and Danny raised his pistol. He hoped it was his friends but...

He let out his breath in a gasp as another shape – not just humanoid but human – darted through the anomaly. It took him a few moments to recognise that it was Becker. He was supposed to be the rear-guard, the last man through, what had gone wrong? Where were the others? He made a dash for the open anomaly but felt Becker crash into him, sending them both crashing to the ground. He kicked out at Becker, catching the soldier in the ribs, and squirmed free. He scrambled to his feet and threw himself at the anomaly, screaming “NO!” as it closed, leaving him on the wrong side of the anomaly.

“Danny?” Becker gasped, holding his chest.

Danny leapt to his feet and grabbed Becker, hauling the soldier to his feet to shake him. “Where are they? Where's James?”

Becker wrenched free and stared at Danny before muttering, “What the... oh fuck!”

“Becker!” Danny growled.

“I thought you knew...” Becker started before turning to stare at the spot the anomaly had spun. “Bloody Lester.” He turned back to Danny as he continued, “Connor and Lester were never coming with us, Danny, it was always going to be just you and me. Lester said Helen wouldn't be looking out for us, that she wouldn't know she needed to stop us. He told me he'd told you, he promised me that you knew.”

Danny's shoulders slumped; James knew he'd never have come here without him, it must have been why he hadn't told Danny the truth. He closed his eyes and prayed to a God he didn't believe in that James – and Connor – were somewhere safe, but he knew what had been chasing them and he knew what the future predators would do when they found them.

“Look, Danny,” Becker said after a moment. “We've still got a mission to complete. Lester...”

“Is a manipulating sod who I'm going to have a long conversation with about lying to their boyfriends. Even if he doesn't remember doing it.” Danny glared at the spot the anomaly had occupied, knowing he couldn't open it again and his only chance of getting home was that Connor – the Connor of this world – could somehow reproduce the anomaly opener. But first they had to save the world or it this mission would all be for nothing.

***

Danny stared at the old, abandoned warehouse Leek had used – was using - as a base for his power grab; to think this was were the world ended. He wanted to burst in and shoot Helen - after all, the bloody bitch had destroyed his life, but... apparently he couldn't. Connor had muttered something about time-lines and James had just looked long-suffering. Not that Danny had cared about changing time, at least, not until James had pulled him in for a kiss and reminded him they'd never be together if Danny was in jail for murder.

“OK, Danny?” Becker asked, interrupting Danny's thoughts.

“No,” Danny answered truthfully. “Lets get this done.”

“As we planned,” Becker said in his serious, no-nonsense soldier voice.

Danny shot him a glare, he might have a reputation for impulsiveness, but he wasn't going to risk James for anything. “Lead on, Mac Duff.”

Becker rolled his eyes before both men crept up to an unwatched manhole and slipped down into the sewers. Luckily it hadn't rained recently and they could easily make their way along the dry, if smelly, walkways above the slowly moving sludge.

When Becker paused at a ladder, Danny mentally checked their position and knew they were under Leek's complex. He silently climbed the ladder, listened for any sounds before he eased the cover open. He held his breath as he climbed out and covered the corridor as Becker joined him. Now all they needed to do was find their hiding spot and wait for the right moment, and Danny really wasn't good at waiting.

***

Danny itched to pace, to do something as they hid in the small maintenance closet they had chosen for their hiding spot. His hand tightened on his EMD pistol when he heard Helen's voice, talking to someone... he tensed when he heard her call him Stephen.

He must have made a movement, for the next thing Danny knew, Becker had him pressed against the wall and signalling him not to do anything stupid.

Danny reluctantly nodded and felt Becker release him. He didn't want to but he knew he couldn't act now, Connor had claimed the rift between Cutter and Hart had to be healed, that only if they worked together would they avert the end of the world. It was still difficult to just wait, to know that Helen was out there within his reach but he couldn't touch her. It was a relief when the feeding alarm sounded and he could finally do something.

He raced towards the cage room, knowing that Becker was making his way to the other entrance. He could only hope the man didn't run into Helen... and paused. Had James purposely given that job to Becker to keep Helen out of temptation's reach?

Danny shook his head, it didn't matter, not now. The cage room and saving Hart from himself did. He reached the door which led into the cage room and peered inside. It didn't look like much, just a room with yellow archways forming squares and what he took to be the feeding chutes hanging over the centre of each square. Stephen James Hart, the bloody martyr, was in the centre of the room, surrounded by snarling creatures. He was just standing there waiting to die while Cutter pounded on the door. At least, Cutter did until he slipped from view to be replaced by Becker peering through the window.

Danny took that as his cue and triggered the door-opening device Connor had made for them, knowing that Becker was doing the same. This wasn't just the report he'd read and re-read when Connor had suggested this plan, this was happening now and he was about to enter a room full of predators. He aimed his EMD, took a deep breath and entered the room, firing at the various creatures as he and Becker stunned them all into unconsciousness. He paused to look around the room, to think that had been where the world ended, not with a bang or any great fanfare, but with the sacrifice of one man.

“Danny!”

Becker's angry hiss broke Danny from his thoughts and he turned to find Becker crouched beside a pale-looking Hart. Blood dripped from a nasty gash on Hart's leg and Danny's gaze followed the trail of blood to a downed raptor, it must have got a hit in before Becker had stunned it.

Fuck! He knew they only had ten minutes before the ARC arrived and the soldiers took this room by force, killing the creatures in an attempt to recover Hart's body. He left Becker skilfully wrapping a dressing around Hart's leg while he carried out his part of the plan by upending the contents of his rucksack onto the floor. He curled his nose up slightly at the bloody chunks of flesh and bone, remembering how long it had taken for Connor to figure out how to clone the flesh. Enough to, at least, pretend that Hart had died here.

He turned to help Becker with Hart when he noticed the raptor's leg twitch. It was time to leave and he hurried over to the door Cutter had been pounding on. He swiftly detached Connor's device and hit the close button before joining Becker again, the soldier carrying Hart over his shoulder. He closed the door before removing the second device, pausing to peer into the room for a moment as he watched the various creatures slowly wake up. He could hear the ARC soldiers arrive and knew it was time to go, to lie low and wait for Helen's next move.

Oho, how suspenseful! How tricky! How enthralling!!
(Poor Danny, needing to be tricked into going. At least Lester seems to know how to channel that idiotic heroism. ;)

Oooohhh, neat plan, very smart way to rescue Stephen without changing the past \0/

And I totally agree with Danny's plan to have a long conversation with Lester. Bad boyfriend!

Good to know the plan worked. Oh, they want to change the past... but not just yet.

Lester was doing what had to be done, but he wasn't being a good boyfriend. Although, he'll probably be very confused over the conversation.

Thanks for reading.
