Helen smiled as she stepped into the anomaly, a short stop in the 22nd century and then she'd be on her way. She froze, sinking into a protective crouch as she emerged not into a quiet corner of the hustling and bustling city, but instead into stillness, not a bird broke the silence which covered the city like a shroud.
She strained her senses to the utmost, she knew she hadn't made a mistake with the anomaly so what the hell had happened in the few weeks she'd been away? Nothing moved and she slunk through the city with a caution bred from many dangerous encounters.
Helen froze when something caught her eye, barely breathing until she identified it as the ragged remnant of a curtain flapping in the breeze. She almost relaxed and continued before her well-tuned senses had her pausing as they sensed danger. Something was there, something moving slowly in the gloom. Something which, when it stepped momentarily into the light, she had never seen on all her travels through time itself. Something predatory which clearly didn't belong here.
She waited until she was certain the predator had left before moving as if a ghost herself across the ruined landscape. Her steps taking her to the one building she knew would tell her what had happened to this city between her last visit and this.
Helen stopped outside the ARC's decaying exterior, noting that it appeared to be as desolate as every other building she had passed. Inside, she quickly searched for and finally discovered the information she needed, the evidence which chilled her blood as she read the documents. The ARC had caused this disaster under the meddling of it's chief scientist. It had unleashed the deadly life-form she had seen outside, a plague which had killed all in its path.
She could hardly believe what she had read and climbed with heavy steps to the roof of the ARC. She stared out almost unseeing over the deserted ruins, knowing the rest of the world was equally devoid of humanity. Her thoughts were in turmoil, she just couldn't believe Nick had not only allowed this disaster to happen, but that he had caused it with his experiments back in the 21st century.
Helen knew she could save Nick, that she could take him somewhere safe outside of time, beyond the reach of the predators which had destroyed this world.
She knew she could save the Earth from the predators. The documentation told her everything she needed to know stop them coming into existence, to stop them ever having the opportunity to hunt these now silent city streets.
Helen also knew she could only choose one of those choices. She knew if she save Nick that she would condemn the rest of humanity and all life on the Earth to this fate. She knew that for the world to survive, than Nick would have to die.
She closed her eyes and knew she had to make that choice, that terrible choice, for no one else was left alive to make it. She either killed the man she loved or she allowed the world to die.
Helen opened her eyes, determination gleaming within them, and knew what she had to do.
