Lester swallowed hard as he hung up the telephone, although he refused to allow his façade to slip any further at the news he'd received from the anomaly site. He carried on his work without fault, ignoring the concerned looks from his team.

It was only during the night, alone in their bed, that he allowed his tears to fall as his heart broke once more. To lose one lover to the anomalies had been painful enough and he'd sworn then never to allow another into his heart.

He wasn't sure he could survive losing a second the same way.
