James waited for a reaction, but Connor didn't move to hug – or slap – him, in fact, Connor seemed frozen. James risked smiling. “I do hope you're not going to take Abby as a role model?” At Connor's confused look, James rubbed his aching jaw.

“You probably deserved it.”

James almost winced at the hollow delivery and took a closer look at Connor. His lover looked haggard, his clothes hanging from his far-too-skinny frame and his eyes shadowed from lack of sleep. James knew he was to blame, even if he'd stayed away to protect Connor.

“I probably did.”

We've all been there. When a reunion didn't go quite as planned. Connor doesn't know James was trying to keep him safe and probably won't care. All he knows is, James could have come back and didn't. Interesting to see where you take this. Depends on the prompt, I know but still... hmmm, well done.
