He's late.

Far too late for her to forgive him.

Especially tonight.

He sighs and closes his eyes as he enters the dining room.

The table set for a candlelit meal.

Two wine glasses abandoned but full.

The expensive bottle of red between them.

An envelope propped against it.

His own envelope is in his pocket, ready to be given.

He still leans it against the bottle.

Even knowing it would not be enough.

That he is far too late to make amends.

That she will not forgive him.

He still tries.

He has to.

Because he still loves her.
