A/N: For the P100 challenge 269: The Armoury and Denial's teamfest. Part of my Dreams Of Yesterday drabble series and definitely angsty. Thanks go to Fred for looking at it for me.
James sat frozen in disbelief as the consultant's words echoed in his ears. They were stark and filled James with more terror than anything he had ever seen or done for his country.
The doctors had thrown everything in their armoury against it and had been hopeful.
But it had come back.
The remission was over and there was nothing more they could offer except palliative care.
James felt a hand grip his and looked up into Steff's eyes, full of acceptance and love, and his composure cracked.
It broke completely when Steff gently brushed the tear from his cheek.
