James couldn't help his smile as he looked at Steff. She did not look happy. “Steff?”
One of her eyebrow's rose elegantly, even though James could hardly see it through the mud covering her face. “Please remind me why I agreed to this, James?”
“Because you dragged me off to the theatre last weekend?”
“Philistine.”
“I thought we agreed to share interests?”
“That was before I knew you liked spending your weekends in caves. If I wanted to bathe in mud, I would have gone to a spa. Just wait until next weekend, James.”
James smiled as he recalled that caving trip. Their first. For all her complaining, Steff had grown to enjoy caving. Just as he had grown to enjoy her theatres and music.
Abby's voice roused him from his musing. “It's still chucking it down.”
“And the anomaly?”
Abby shook her head, scattering water from her hair. “Still closed.” When James sighed, she added, “At least this cave's dry.” She sat beside him, “How's the ankle?”
“Twisted.”
Abby squeezed his arm. “We will get home, James.”
James sighed again, but he had to believe that.
