James closed his eyes as memories threatened to overwhelm him.
Of the first time he'd seen her, her eyes flashing with laughter as she talked to her friends.
Of being so tongue-tied when he asked her out on their first date that she'd smiled and agreed as he had stuttered to a embarrassed halt.
Of their first kiss, sweet and tender and so wonderful.
Of splashing in the surf as they ran down the beach together, laughing and holding hands.
Of how nervous he had been the first time they made love and how wonderful she had made him feel.
A lone tear ran down James' face.
Her face so full of happiness when he had dropped to one knee and proposed.
At how he had almost stumbled when he'd seen her looking so beautiful at the altar.
Her gentle kiss and loving look when he'd sworn on their wedding night that he'd never let anything hurt her, that he'd die first.
The wonderful warm feeling that had filled him when she had told him he'd be a daddy.
The feeling of love that had filled his heart to overfilling when he had held his first child in his arms.
A sob forced itself from his chest.
How she'd lost weight and brushed off his concern, telling him it was her diet.
How she protected him for as long as she could, until he had made the appointment himself.
The sharp pain in his chest when they'd been given the news, her arms wrapped around him as he sobbed.
Scouring the internet for every treatment available, no matter how costly.
Seeing her so ill and pale and knowing there was nothing he could do but be with her.
Knowing he's broken his vow as he held her in his arms.
