I could see Stephen’s disbelief before he even uttered, “You want me to believe, New Year, new you?”
“Yes,” I almost begged him. “Please, just give me another chance.”
“Like you gave me?”
I winced when Stephen rubbed his jaw, whether unconsciously or as an unsubtle reminder of when I’d hit him. “I should have,” I admitted. I knew I’d lost any chance to make amends when I met his distrusting gaze. “I truly am sorry.”
“You are?”
“Yes, I should have listened to you. I shouldn’t have thrown away years of friendship without hearing your side of the story.”
