The absence of guards had Nick racing into the ARC, fear of what he might find growing with each blood splatter. His steps faltered when he found the mammoth tossing its head, a future predator dangling from a tusk. His gaze darted around the atrium until he found Lester, bloodied, battered but alive. “Are you OK?”

“Perfectly fine,” Lester replied, straightening his cuffs.

“Really?” Nick asked. He grasped a shoulder beneath the torn suit, feeling the faint tremors under his hand, hearing the hiss of pain as Lester pulled free. “James, please.”

Lester sighed before nodding. “Maybe not perfectly fine.”
