I'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but maybe it will still spark a bunny all the same. I think it must be pretty scary for Lester. I see him as a man who likes to be in control, but becoming a werewolf makes him lose control. I could be wrong, but I'm assuming that he never would have acted on his feelings for Cutter if that protective wolf instinct of his hadn't kicked in and Lester hadn't started acting as Cutter's protector in that first story. There's also the fact that while being a wolf makes him powerful, it also puts him in a vulnerable position -- as we saw when he was captured and taken to the pound.
Two other aspects of Lester's personality that come into play are his pride and sense of independance. I could be reading too much into this story, but I get the feeling that Lester really took exception to Cutter claiming to be his owner, even if it was said to spring him from the pound. Still, I don't know how comfortable Lester is with the idea of being owned, even in terms of a relationship (e.g. being possessed by his lover). I bet he'd have issues with it even if he wasn't a werewolf.
Hope that helps. Let me know if I can provide any more information. :-)
BTW I have a little confession to make. Your wolfverse actually sparked a bunny for me. Oh, it's not a werewolf story, but it does involve animal transformation...sort of. *g* I'm not sure when I'll finish it as it's kind of on the long side and I haven't had much time to work on it the last couple of weeks. However, I plan to post it eventually.
